MEYERS, Gerald David “Shorty”
Age 87, of Brookville, dropped anchor September 14, 2012 following an extended illness. He was preceded in death by parents, Russell & Bessie (Smoot) Meyers; brothers, Lowell, Dwain, Beryl & Lloyd; sister, Doris Jean Collins. He was a member of Verona United Methodist Church where he served willingly & lovingly in many positions. He served in the US Navy June 1943 to February 1946 as Fire Control man 3rd Class. Campaign metals of WWII: Occupational Service, American Campaign, European-African, Middle East Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign with 7 battle stars. Shorty was a charter member of VFW Post 975 and a life member of VFW Post 7262, Greenville. He served as commander of each of these posts, as well as District 3 Commander in 1984-85, and all State Commander that year. Among his many achievements he instigated and completed the installation of the Vietnam Memorial Monument in Roselawn Cemetery, Lewisburg. Shorty retired from Friendship Village in 1987, and was farming up until his stroke in 2005. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Arlene (Shuff) Meyers; daughter & son-in-law, Nadine & Bill Cornett; son & daughter-in-law, Wendell Meyers & Davetta Brock Meyers; grandson, Jansen Brock Meyers; granddaughter, 1LT Jenna Meyers; great-granddaughter, Paige Meryl Meyers; sister & brother-in-law, Margie & Frank Davis; sister-in-law, Darlene Meyers, and many nieces & nephews. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, Sept. 23 at Verona UMC, 206 S. State St. Verona OH 45378. Visitation will be held from 1-2 PM with service at 2. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to either Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Av.
