David Mundhenk Obituary

MUNDHENK, David Allen

Age 87, of Brookville, went home to be with the Lord on July 16, 2024, at Brookhaven Nursing Home. David was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Carol (Laponuke) Mundhenk; his parents, Joseph and Audrey (Temple) Mundhenk; his brother, Robert Mundhenk (Bernice); and his sister, Joyce Oller.

David served our country for four years in the U.S. Army including a tour in Germany. David also dedicated 30 years of his life as a mechanic for the City of Dayton, specializing in repairing vehicles for the Police and Fire Departments. He had a natural talent for fixing things and was always eager to lend his skills to family, friends, and neighbors, whether it was vehicles, mowers, plumbing or electrical, he could do it all.

Among his passions, David enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending long nights in the woods accompanied by his many coonhounds over the years, with "Joey" holding a special place in his heart. He could retell every hunting story since he was a kid with such great detail and also tell you about every woods that he ever hunted in.

David and Carol were married for 60 years and enjoyed spending time at Lake Erie with their family, doing home improvements, gardening and living on their mini farm. Their love for each other stood the test of time and they were an amazing example of perseverance during life’s trials and storms. Their love and dedication to each other and their family will have a ripple effect for generations.

David made lifelong memories with his children. He taught them a variety of skills, from shooting, working on cars, to pulling pranks like short-sheeting beds. After working hard all day, he would come home to tend the garden and still take time to play hours of badminton with them. He taught them about working hard, having integrity and the importance of family.

Beyond these adventures with his children, he was an amazing Papaw to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, they all have many fond memories of him. Jenna’s favorite memory with Papaw is crawdad fishing in the creek, they would bring them home to feed Nana’s rescued raccoons. Nick enjoyed the times that Papaw would take him and his friends to the BMX track. And one of Kara’s favorite memories is fishing in the pond with Papaw alongside the raccoons who would play with the minnows in the water, learning to find their own food. Cousin’s night with Papaw was a favorite for everyone and created memories that will last a lifetime for all of us.

Truly, memories of David are filled with laughter, love, and his unwavering spirit. Above all, David's greatest love was his family. He will be remembered as a gentle, steadfast husband, father and grandfather, imparting love to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that they will forever hold in their hearts.

David is survived by his daughters, Amy Kingrey (Derk) and Marla Grieshop (Jay); his son, Eric Mundhenk (Jackie); grandchildren, Kara Stose (Michael McKenzie), Nick Stose (Jenna), Jenna Hulett (Wyatt), Max Mundhenk, and Myah Mundhenk; great-grandchildren, Calvin Sherman, Bailey Sherman, Connor McKenzie, Eliana Stose, Luke Hulett, and Weston Hulett; his brother, John Mundhenk (Maggie); his sister, Jeannine Thompson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
