Juanita Young Obituary

Juanita Young was born on February 15,1935 in Berea, KY. Her childhood began during the Great Depression. One of her earliest memories that haunted her was when her family lost the farm during this time, unable to pay the annual taxes. Her father was able to maintain approximately three acres on which he built a home and raised his family. After attending school to become a carpenter, her father worked in Kentucky and Ohio in construction. At times this would take him away from the family for months; however, he sometimes took his family to the Miami Valley in Ohio while he worked. This familiarity with this area would have a lasting effect on Juanita. During her childhood her mother and father accepted Christ and joined Liberty Avenue Baptist Church. The church and activities surrounding the church became the focal point for Juanita, her parents and their family. As a young adult Juanita moved to Dayton, OH, an area which she was familiar with when her father had worked here. Although she would later mostly be a stay-at-home wife and mother, as a single woman she applied and began working at Dayton Gasket where she ran a punch press making automobile gaskets. Later she also worked at Miksells Potato Chips. During this time her father continued to come to the Dayton area when work back home was slow. On one of these such work trips her father met this young man from Hazard, KY who like many in the 1950's had come to Dayton to work in the General Motors factories here. One day while this young man was visiting Thory. He met Juanita, the future Mrs. Young. Over the years their family, which included two children was very active in church. Dad would play the guitar and lead the music and mom taught youth and ladies Sunday school classes. This strong work ethic and love of God and family is the legacy they have passed to the children and grandchildren today. Juanita is preceded in by her parents Thory and Pearl Richmond Shelton, husband; Readith Young, two brothers; Felix Shelton, Marcus Shelton. Surviving Juanita is a son, Ricky Young (Pamela); daughter, Teresa Smith (Ron); three grandsons, Dustin Smith (Jennifer), Adrian Young, Aaron Young; two great-grandchildren, Estella and Emelia; two brothers, William Shelton (Charlene) and Carlos Shelton. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on January 5th, 2023 at GILBERT FELLERS FUNERAL HOME 950 ALBERT RD.
