Lorene Boggs Obituary

It is with a firm hope in the resurrection that we announce the passing of Lorene Alice Boggs on 27 August 2024 at the age of 100. She lived devoted to God, family and country while having adventures in Europe and the US, serving others as a registered nurse, and sharing craft skills with countless others.

Born on 23 June 1924 in Chicago, Lorene split her time between Chicago, IL and Hamlet, IN growing up. She was active at Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church and graduated from Chicago’s Taft High School in 1942. While at business school in Chicago she met James H. Boggs who was learning to be an Army radioman at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. They exchanged letters during his Pacific Theater deployment and married in January 1946.  They settled in Dayton, OH and had a son in 1947. James was activated for the Korea War and Lorene had a baby girl in 1951.

After James’ release from active duty, they were founding members of Messiah Lutheran Church in Dayton. Lorene and James were active with Sunday school, church council, and youth group. Lorene was a Girl Scout leader and expanded her sewing, tatting and knitting with carding and spinning wool, making natural dyes, and weaving rugs. Lorene went to college and became a registered nurse in 1968. The couple moved to Trotwood and attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Brookville. Lorene went back to college and earned a PhD in Medical Hypnosis in 1989. These skills reduced cancer patient pain without drugs. Lorene enjoyed immensely time with her children and grandchildren.

James retired and they traveled to visit craft fairs and historic sites while remaining active in church and personal craft projects. James died in 2008, and Lorene moved in 2014 to Bennington, IN to be with her daughter and son-in-law. She began attended St Peter Lutheran Church. She made several quilt tops as for church missions, was regular in attendance, and humbled by the love shown her by church members.

She is survived by her son James D, son-in-law Daniel, four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
